Obituary of Norbert James Shiyou, Sr.
Norbert James Shiyou, Sr., who was a lifelong resident of Bay Saint Louis, passed from this earth to join his Heavenly Father in peace at the age of 69 at his home with his family by his side on Tuesday, August 13. He was one of eleven children, Michael Shiyou, Edward Shiyou, Dolphus Shiyou, Eldridge “Tody” Shiyou, Ronald Shiyou, his twin brother, Norman Shiyou, Marie Storey, Ruth Summers, Beverly Necaise, and Ida ‘Evon’ Shiyou, born in Bay St. Louis to Crayton and Lola Shiyou.
At the early age of 14, Norbert began working construction. Being the motivated person that he was, he lied about his age in order to operate heavy equipment to build Interstate 10. With that opportunity, he discovered his passion for his life long career. As time passed he continued to develop multiple properties such as Eden Isle in Slidell, LA, strip mining in Alabama, and worked in Africa as a crane operator digging pipelines for McDermott. Later, he became self- employed owning and operating heavy equipment in addition to building and operating VNL’s Quick Stop in Lakeshore. Norbert was outspoken, funny, and charitable to anyone who was in need and never met a stranger. He was a loving father and was dedicated to working hard to provide for his family.
Norbert is survived in death by his wife of 36 years, Theresa Shiyou; his daughter, Vanesa Martinez, spouse of Hank Martinez, and grandchildren, Brooks and Blyth; his son, Norbert “James” Shiyou, Jr. and fiance’ Margaret Barq and grandchild Aubrey; and daughter LeTisha Murphy spouse of Daniel Murphy and grandchildren Dane and Rush.
Being raised in a large family in the 1950’s, providing was a lifestyle that he accepted and embraced. His kind heart, generosity and witty sense humor will forever be engraved in our hearts and minds and will live on through his children and grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM, Friday, August 16, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 9113 Kiln Delisle Rd., Pass Christian, with a visitation from 2:30 PM until the service. Interment will follow at St. Joseph at Rotten Bayou Cemetery.
