Wyatt “Raymond” Hunter, Sr., age 76 of Hattiesburg, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2020. Raymond was born in McComb on May 24, 1944, to Wyatt Ray Hunter and Elois Tolar Hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Nelson Hunter; his four children, Hope Hunter Knight (Alan), Faith Hunter Welborn, Stephanie Hunter Canonici (Jason), and Wyatt Raymond Hunter, Jr.; six grandchildren, Kinsey Knight, Mak Knight, Tolar Welborn, Jacob Canonici, Caden Canonici, and Rylie Hunter; two sisters, Faith Wainwright (Walter “Skip”) of Houston, TX, Rachel Moore (Andy) of Waco, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
Raymond received a BA degree from Mississippi College and a JD degree from the University of Mississippi. He practiced law in the southern counties of Mississippi for over forty years, represented plaintiffs and defendants and insurance carriers in trials in County, Circuit, and Supreme Court of Mississippi, Federal District Courts and Fifth Circuit Court Of Appeals, and had a wide background in Chancery Court cases.
During his legal history from the date of his admission to the Bar in 1970, Raymond practiced with the following law firms: Estes, Blackwell & Hunter; Greaves, Terry & Hunter; W. Raymond Hunter, Attorney at Law; Hunter & Miller; Bryant & Stennis; and Bryant, Dukes & Blakeslee. As of January 1, 2008, he continued his practice of law as a sole practitioner with an emphasis on Mediation and Arbitration.
Raymond served as Municipal Court Judge for the City of Long Beach for two terms, served as a City prosecutor for the City of Long Beach, attended the American Judicial College, served in directorships for the Mississippi State Bar and on various committees of the State Bar. He had a rating of “AV” in Martindale-Hubbell which had been maintained for over 35 years. He participated in a course of study with the American Arbitration Association and obtained Mediation Certification in 1998, and completed several Advanced Mediation courses sponsored by the University Of Mississippi School Of Law and the Association of Attorney-Mediators. He was also registered with the Mississippi State Bar Registry of Mediators. By agreement between insurance carriers, defense lawyers, and plaintiffs’ lawyers, he had conducted binding arbitrations in several cases.
He was a member of the Mississippi State Bar, the American Association for Justice, Mississippi Association for Justice, Mississippi Prosecutors Association, Harrison County Bar Association, Mississippi Claims Association, and Association of Attorney-Mediators. He served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Attorney-Mediators for 3 years. Raymond was a founding member and former President of the Mississippi Chapter of Association of Attorney-Mediators. He was awarded the “President’s Award” for 2011 by the Association of Attorney-Mediators. He was chosen to serve as an appeals Judge in BP Oil Spill cases in 2011. He was appointed to the Board of Directors of the ADR section of the Mississippi Bar in 2011.
He was, since its inception, on the Mississippi Bar’s list of mediators and additionally on the Federal Court list for both the Northern and Southern District of Mississippi. Following Hurricane Katrina he was on the list of approved mediators for AAA and served as a mediator on the Department of Insurance Mediation Program for the State of Mississippi. He also served the United States District Court as a mediator for “Katrina” litigation cases since the inception of that program. He also served as mediator in a combination of Katrina cases, state and federal litigation cases, and other private cases totaling approximately 2,500 cases. Raymond also served as Special Master for the United States District Court, Southern District of Mississippi.
