Chief Petty Officer William C. Murphy, Jr., age 80, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 27, 2006.
He was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and had been a resident of Gulfport since 1974. He retired from the U.S. Navy Seabees after serving 24 years. Chief Murphy entered the Navy in 1944 right out of high school. He graduated in Tarpon Springs, FL in 1944. August found recruit Murphy in Boot Camp in Bainbridge, MD. After graduation he was transferred to gunnery school in Little Creek, Virginia. As a Seaman 1st Class and upon completion of gunnery school, he was sent to an Armed Guard Center in Brooklyn, NY. He was assigned to the SS George Sharswood as one of the gun crew aboard a merchant ship. After returning from Antwerp, Belgium, Seaman 1st Class Murphy was transferred to the West Coast, Treasure Island, in the Armed Guard for the Pacific. The Armed Guard was overloaded as a number of personnel were transferred to the fleet. Murphy wound up on the U.S.S. Maine, August 8 in Subic Bay, P.I.
After returning to the states in December 1945, Seaman Murphy was transferred to Jacksonville for release from the service in June 1946.
Chief Murphy was awared the following medals: American Campaign Medal, European-African Medal, National Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Device & 8 stars, Navy Achievement Medal with combat """"V"""" & 1 star, Battle """"E""""2 awards, Combat Action with 1 star, Navy Unit Commendation with 1 star, Republic of Vietnam with Gallantry Cross, Meritorious Unit Commendation with 3 awards, 4th Good Conduct and Markman M16 awards.
Chief Murphy was preceded in death by his mother Ada L. Campbell and his father; daughter, Patricia James; sister, Helen Albrecht.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ursula Murphy of Gulfport, daughters, Dianne Bissett of Falls Church, VA, Pamela Murphy of Providence, RI, and Tammy Pope of Gulfport, MS. He is also survived by a sister, Barbara Hammerly of Palm Harbor, FL, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Graveside services with full U.S. Navy Honors will be on Tuesday, January 2, 2006, at the National Cemetery in Biloxi at 2:30 p.m.
