William Douglas Coole

William Douglas Coole, 93, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Gulfport, MS, died at 6:02 am Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born February 28, 1918, in Chicago, IL, he was the son of William Henry and Annie Clucas Cooil, Manx immigrants from the Isle of Man. On March 19, 1942, he married LaVerne Annabelle Van Rite in Chicago, IL. She died July 10, 1998. Doug started his professional career with milk delivery routes for Bowman Dairy Co. in Chicago, IL and worked his way up to Vice President / Sales for Iowana Farms Milk Co. in Bettendorf, IA. He then moved to Gulfport, MS in 1967 to become General Manager for Barber Pure Milk Company and later purchased the Kan Do Lounge in Gulfport, was the Manager for the Seabee CPO and EM Clubs, eventually retiring as the Food and Beverage Manager for the Buena Vista Hotel in Biloxi. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving as Group Sergeant Major, Headquarters Troop, 106th Cavalry Group, which was the last horse cavalry division in Europe during World War II. He received a bronze star in 1945.
He enjoyed cooking, dogs, horses, birds, music, dancing, swimming, woodworking, and fixing things. He was very creative, analytical, and ahead of his time in the area of marketing.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra L. (Donald) Porth of Burlington, and Kathy (O.T.) Watkins of Huntsville, AL; one son, Jeffrey Coole of West Burlington; eight grandchildren, Doug Snyder, Dean Snyder, Graham Porth, Catherine Porth, 1Lt William Watkins, Lynsie Watkins Steele, Lake Watkins, and Doug Watkins, seven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Ashley, Robert, Michael, Jacob, Mitchell, Gabriel; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, one daughter, and one sister.
Visitation will be from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME in Biloxi, MS.
The Graveside Committal Service and Interment for Mr. Coole will be 1:30 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at Biloxi National Cemetery with his family officiating. Full military honors will be rendered.
A memorial has been established for the Humane Society.
