William """"Buddy"""" David Chinn, Sr., age 83, and a resident of Biloxi, died Friday, April 25, 2008 in Biloxi.
David """"Buddy"""" Chinn was born in Biloxi on April 6, 1925. He was in the Class of 1943 at Biloxi High School but left before graduation to join the U.S. Navy. He participated in 7 battles in the Pacific while serving aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Sangamon, which was struck by a kamikaze during the battle of Okinawa. He was then transferred to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Suwannee. He was at Okinawa when World War II ended, and then participated in the occupation of Japan.
Upon his return to the U.S. he was discharged and returned to high school, and graduated with the Class of 1946. He later received a B.S. degree from Mississippi Southern College and a Master's degree from McNeese State College. He taught school for twenty-one years. During the Korean War, he served in the Army with the 631st Armored Field Artillery Battalion in Germany, and was highly decorated.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Harvey and Edwardine Chinn; and sisters: Mary Alice James, Lillie C. Joachim, Julia A. Wellman, Mildred Mallett and Marion Huber.
Mr. Chinn is survived by his wife, Lottie Chinn; children: Ingrid Ellerbe of Austin, TX, Mary A. Dennison of Pensacola, FL, and David Chinn, Sr of Biloxi; stepchildren: Joseph Baughman of Biloxi, Pamela Ann Whitton, Sherry Elizabeth Mills, Rebecca Evelyn Wells, and Timothy Lavon Baughman, all of Ocean Springs; a sister: Elizabeth Byrd; 4 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
Friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 from 11:30 until 12:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will be at 12:30 p.m. followed by interment at Biloxi National Cemetery. Arrangements are by the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Rd, Biloxi.
