Lt. Col. William M. Brewer, U.S.A.F., Retired, age 92, resident of Gulfport, passed away at home on Sunday, September 16, 2012.
Lt. Col. Brewer was born in Greenwood, MS, to Norman Craig and Ella Hunter Jumper Brewer. He graduated from the University of MS with a B.S. Degree and the University of Southern MS with a M.S. Degree. He served 23 years in the United States Air Force and 5 years in the Reserves before his retirement. During his military career, he served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. His accolades included the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, among many others. He was a special agent for the FBI in the 1940's, specializing in Communist Subversive Activities. He established the first Criminal Justice Program at the junior college level in the state of MS at MGCCC-Jeff Davis Campus. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport since 1970. He was a Life Loyal member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, having been initiated in 1938. He was an Order of Constantine Sig, which is awarded for many years of service and was a very active member of the local Gulf Coast Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Norman Craig Brewer, Jr. and David J. Brewer.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Brewer of Gulfport; daughter, Barbara Brewer Swartz and her husband, Richard L. Swartz, Jr., of Titusville, FL; two granddaughters, Laura Swartz of Viera, FL, and Jennifer Swartz of Austin, TX.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Gulfport, at 4:00 p.m. Friends may visit one hour prior in the Christian Life Center.
Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home, Greenwood, MS, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, www.dav.org, or the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
