William Thomas Wittmann, affectionately known as Bill, was born on December 21, 1928, in Pass Christian, Mississippi. He left this world peacefully on October 23, 2024, in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the age of 95.
He was also known as GOAT by his close friends in Pass Christian. Even though at that time there was no meaning of GOAT, now it means “greatest of all time, ” he truly fulfilled that definition. And to his children, he was the greatest dad of all time.
Bill dedicated thirty years of his life to Civil Service at Keesler Air Force Base, contributing his skills and expertise to his community and the nation. His commitment extended beyond his professional life, as he also worked with the Gulfport School District, leaving a lasting impact on the educational landscape.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Bill served honorably during the USAF Korean Conflict, embodying the ideals of bravery and service. An active member of the Knights of Columbus - Bishop Gunn Council, he was honored as a 4th Degree Knight, demonstrating his deep faith and commitment to his community through his involvement at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
Known endearingly as "Mr. Fix It," Bill had a remarkable ability to repair and work on anything that needed attention. His ingenuity and resourcefulness made him not only a valuable friend and family member but also a revered figure within his community.
Education played an important role in Bill's life; he graduated from St. Joseph Academy, which laid the foundation for his lifelong pursuit of knowledge and service.
Bill is survived by his three beloved children, Sally Frances Wilson and her husband Derrel, William Thomas "Tommy" Wittmann, Jr. and his wife Dana, and Jack Christian Wittmann and his wife Jennifer. He found joy and pride in his grandchildren, Derrel Wilson and his wife Beth, Daniel Wilson, David Wilson and his wife Kimberley, Kristi Webb and her husband Brandon, Marian Bailey and her husband Brandon, Mary Haas and her husband Ethan, and Clark Wittmann. His legacy will continue through his great-grandchildren, Addie Wilson, Thomas Wilson, Breton Wilson, Kylie Wilson, Madi Kate Wilson, Josie Webb, Henry Webb, Helen Blake Bailey, Micah Haas, and Poppy Wilson. In addition to his immediate family, he is remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving family members who cherished him dearly.
Preceding Bill in death were his wife, Addie Frances Wittmann; his father, Joseph Justin Wittmann, Sr.; his mother, Annie Farrell Wittmann; his brothers, J.J. Wittmann, Jr., and Robert Wittmann; and his daughter, Myra Ann Wittmann. Each of them holds a special place in the hearts of those who remain, and they will be lovingly honored in the days to come.
Visitation for Bill will be held on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, located at 2415 17th St, Gulfport, MS. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM. Following Mass, the graveside service will take place at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. After the cemetery, family and friends will gather at the church in Presentation Hall for a Reception.
Bill Wittmann's life was a testament to service, commitment, and love. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Special thanks to his caregivers, Catherine Kirksey, Neotia Nettles, Darlene Burney, and especially Dynita White, who has remained a family friend since caring for his wife before she passed in 2016.
