Waltraud (Wally) Adam Johnson Alford, age 82, resident of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2022.
Wally was born in Butzbach, Germany on February 8, 1939. She graduated from MGCCC-Jeff Davis Campus and USM as a Registered Nurse. She worked as an RN at Garden Park and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport before retiring from the VA Hospital. She had worked at the VA in Birmingham, Gulfport, and Biloxi. She was a Water Safety Instructor Trainer for the American Red Cross from 1965-82. She served in a pool setting in the College Park Subdivision, Biloxi Pools, Hiller Park, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis, St. Stanislaus, and in Long Beach. She was the Director of the College Park Center and Pool, and served Keesler Air Force in Lifesaving, Swimming, and Water Safety. She was a volunteer with the American Red Cross Disaster Relief helping after Hurricane Camille. She was a First Aid Instructor for Mississippi Power and was a Girl Scout Leader (Brownies and Girl Scouts). Wally was also a Teacher’s Aide at 28th St. Elementary School and was a volunteer with the Bethel Free Health Clinic and Feed My Sheep. She was a Member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served in the choir, was an elder, and was Chairman of Prayer Group and Congregational Care.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.O. Alford; and her parents, Herman and Rosemarie Adam.
She is survived by her children, Richard (Rick) Alan Johnson (Lynne), Teresa (Terry) Johnson Barnes, Wendy Alford Stephens (Wayne), and Kristi Alford Goldberg (Charles); her siblings, Karin Thomas and Tony Phyle; grandchildren, Ashley Johnson, Amber Johnson Thomas (Chad), Jeremy Goldberg, and Kacey Stephens Coffey (Matthew); and her great granddaughter, Hannah Coffey.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, from 3:00-4:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. A memorial service will follow in the Sanctuary at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
