Gulfport

Walter Eugene Grimes, Jr., 74 our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend passed away on May 3, 2020 after complications following a stroke.

Mr. Grimes was born and raised in Washington D.C. but for the past 38 years, he called the Mississippi Gulf Coast home. He was known by everyone as Gene and "Daddy" by his loving wife of over 60 years, Martha "Jane" Grimes who he called "Mommy". The two met when they were just 13 and 15, started dating and then married. He then went on to join the Army where he was in the armored division and received many awards and was honorably discharged. He was an avid Dart thrower, was on a local dart team for MANY years, and he could out throw anyone blindfolded! He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing; it was hard to ever find him sitting inside the house. He loved doing yard work; you could even catch him outside playing basketball with the neighborhood kids and his son. He had a love for sports, his team being Washington Redskins! In his younger days he played Fast Pitch softball on a men's league where he was the pitcher. During this time he also coached little league football, basketball and baseball. He had many friends he adored, one of them being his lifelong friend Dale Smith.

He was the father of three children, Lisa (Patrick) Drainville, Casey (Doug) Street and Frankie Grimes; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hagan, Cristina Drainville, Scott Drainville, Hannah Drainville, Ashleigh McQuilling, Bailey Street, Sierra Street and Ethan Grimes; along with five great grandchildren. His brother, Frank (Diane) Powers was a very important person in his life that he loved dearly and talked to quite often. Gene is survived in his death to the listed above along with many other family members and friends.

He is preceded in his death by his mother, Vaden Hershman; step-father, Art Hershman; step-father, Aubrey Powers; sister, Carol Stavley; mother in law, Ethel Stratil and other beloved family members.

He will be cremated but, with Covid19 protocols in place the family is not holding a service at this time. One will be held at a later date for family and friends. Our family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Ocean Springs Hospital Physicians, Nurses and Staff also to Hospice of Light for the care he received and the support we received during this difficult time, we thank you so much.
