Walter Joe Eades, Sr, HMCS USN, retired, of Long Beach, MS, died October 22, 2007.
Born on April 15, 1935 in Vaiden, MS, Mr. Eades was a longtime resident of Long Beach, MS. He retired after twenty four years of service in the United States Navy as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and was decorated with the Navy Cross among other medals.
Although he traveled throughout the world during his career in the Navy, Mr. Eades loved the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he served two tours of active duty at the Seabee Base and set down roots in retirement.
Upon retirement from the Navy, he went to work as a civilian for the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport from which he retired after 14 years.
His primary focus during retirement was on his grandchildren with whom he spent countless hours entertaining and teaching. Mr. Eades served on the Long Beach zoning board and was active during his military service as a softball coach and little league coach. He was a charter member of the Long Beach Yacht Club and maintained membership until one year before his death. He enjoyed gardening, football, building, and carpentry. He was dedicated to his family and life-long friendships. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Blanks, friends, neighbors and caregivers.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Sandra, and three children; son, Walter Joe Eades of Gulfport, MS, his wife, Jill Eades; daughter, Suzanne DeHaillecourt of Amory, MS, and her husband, Barry, and daughter, Kimberly Thomas of Lexington, Kentucky, and her husband, Steve Thomas. Four surviving grandchildren are Weylin Oliver of Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, Hannah and Zachary Eades of Gulfport and Kayleigh Thomas of Lexington, Kentucky. His surviving sister, Flora Jane Parker, resides in Laurel with his niece, Martha Ann McArthur and family. He was preceded in death by Latt Eades, Robert Eades, and sister, Scottie Eades.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at noon at the First United Methodist Church, Gulfport, where friends may call from 10:30 AM until service time. Burial with full military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
