Mr. George Walton """"Walt"""" Ewing, Jr., age 70, resident of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, April 1, 2010.
Mr. Ewing was born on March 25, 1940, in Biloxi to George W. Ewing, Sr. and Thelma Wilkerson Ewing. He graduated from Biloxi High School in 1958 and the University of Southern Mississippi with Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Specialist in Educational Administration degrees. He worked in the Gulfport School System as a teacher and administrator for 22 years. He was also Biloxi Schools administrator for 11 years and a teacher at St. James Elementary School for 2 years. After retirement, Walt spent his days taking care of his four grandchildren, whom he adored. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 11541, and Sigma Phi Epsilon (USM). He served for 25 years on the State Board of Mississippi Special Olympics and was very active in numerous local, state, regional, and national teacher and administrator organizations.
Mr. Ewing was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Andrea Clair Ewing; and brother, Benjamin Franklin Ewing.
He is surivived by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Blumer Ewing of Gulfport; daughter, Andrea (Lee) Overstreet of Biloxi; son, Buddy (Chrissie) Ewing of Slidell, LA; grandchildren, Rivers and Aldyn Ewing of Slidell, and Kaitlyn and Emily Overstreet of Biloxi; and his brother, Jack (Patricia) Ewing of Woolmarket.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, April 5, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport, at 12 o'clock Noon. Friends are invited to visit two hours prior to Mass.
Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
The Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.
