Brig. General Wallace E. Farragut, US Army, Retired, age 74, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009 in Pass Christian.
He was a life long resident of Pass Christian and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry. He served in the US Army and the MS Army National Guard for 32 years, receiving numerous medals and commendations and he worked for the Civil Service at KAFB as Branch Manager with the 3300 training wing. Gen. Farragut served as a Commissioner for the Gulfport/Biloxi International Airport for 5 years and he enjoyed golf and piddling around the house.
Colonel Wallace Eugene Farragut has rendered immeasurable service to the National Guard, the State of Mississippi, and the United States of America during his military career of more than thirty-two years. He has demonstrated outstanding leadership and the highest level of professional competence and tenacity of purpose while serving in various duty positions of increasing responsibility. He served as Executive Officer, 138th Supply and Service Battalion 1 April 1976, to 15 August 1976. During this short tenure, his management of training contributed greatly to the unitaÌââ¢s successful Annual Training period. He commanded the 138th Service and Supply Battalion from 16 August 1976 to 30 September 1908, and was instrumental in establishing the logistical support for Camp Shelby, Mississippi. COL Farragut served as Director, Security, Plans, and Operations Section, 114th Support Group, from 1 October 1980, to 4 July 1983, and was instrumental in developing group war plans and planning ODT. He served as Executive Officer, 114th Support Group, 5 July 1983, to 20 November 1983, and established a vigorous staff visit program. COL Farragut served as Deputy Commander, 184th Transportation Brigade, 21 November 1983, to 9 September 1984, and then served as Commander, 114th Support Group, 10 September 1984, to 15 November 1987. As Commander of the 114th Support Group, COL Farragut excelled in training his staff and established a rapport with commanders in Europe that he would be working with in war. He maintained 100% strength in the Group and led all of his units to unprecedented readiness heights. COL Farragut served as Deputy Commander, 184th Transportation Brigade, 16 November 1987, to 13 January 1989. In this position, he greatly expanded aÌâÅExercise WHEELLSaÌâ, a multi-mode exercise written by the 184th Brigade and used to train motor transport units. His contributions to the Mississippi National Guard during his many years of service have been invaluable.
COL Farragut is a graduate of the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma; Transportation Officer Familiarization Course at Ft. Eustis, Virginia; Transportation Officer Advanced Course; Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Battalion Staff Refresher Course at Ft. Lee, Virginia.
COL FarragutaÌââ¢s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, with 3 bronze oak leaf clusters; National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, with 2 bronze hour glass devices; Army Service Ribbon; Mississippi Magnolia Cross; Mississippi Magnolia Medal; Mississippi Emergency Service Medal, with 4 bronze oak leaf clusters; Mississippi Service School Medal with 2 bronze oak leaf clusters; Mississippi Longevity Medal, with 1 silver oak leaf cluster and 1 bronze oak leaf cluster.
Mr. Farragut was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Elizabeth Farragut; parents, Charles Cooper Farragut, Sr. and Annie Sylvester Griffin Farragut; three brothers, Adolph Farragut, Charles Cooper Farragut, Jr, David G. Farragut; and a sister, Annie Farragut Necaise. He is survived by his wife Diane Elizabeth Hincks Farragut of Pass Christian; children, Wallace E. Farragut (Samina) of Ocean Springs, Steven W. Farragut (Jenny) of Gulfport, Richard A. Farragut (Kippi) and Adam F. Farragut (Jessica Lindholm) all of Pass Christian; his siblings, Leada Niolet (Herman), Norma Cantrell, Georgine F. Vix (Elbert), Betty Van Zandt (Edward), Alice Russell (Tom), Grace Necaise, and Joseph Farragut (Phyllis); and four grandchildren, Lauren Farragut, Tom Farragut, Kayleigh and Taylor Farragut.
Visitation will be held from 5pm until 8pm on Monday, September 14, 2009 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Rd, Long Beach. The funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 in the funeral home Chapel. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery, Pass Christian.
