Viola Gretchen Estep, of Biloxi, passed away peacefully on her birthday February 26, 2024, in Biloxi Mississippi, age 97.
Viola was born in Lyman, MS. to the late James and Eula Hawkins.
Following her high school graduation, she became a military wife to her loving husband Lawrence Estep, traveling and moving extensively before settling on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1959.
She retired from Mississippi Power, where she worked in accounting.
Viola is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Larry Estep, her son Jerry Estep, her parents, a brother George Hawkins, sister Mildred McDaniel, Sue Lambrech and Betty Geil.
She is survived by her son Ret. Lt. Col. Terry L. Estep of Tavernier, FL; three grandchildren Clayton (Stephanie) Estep of Peachtree City, GA, Parker Estep and Sarah (Adam) Evans of Westwood, MA; four great-grandchildren Davis and Reagan Estep, and Payton and Presley Evans. Special nephew Jimmie (Winette) McDaniel of McHenry, MS and special niece Jerry Ann (Bob) Dye of Brevard, NC.
Viola enjoyed many things throughout her life. She enjoyed traveling in her motor home, cooking for family and was an avid New Orleans Saints Fan. Longtime member of the Grace Memorial and Woolmarket Baptist Church. She was also a member of the American Legion, MPC Retired Ladies and the Red Hat Society.
The family would like to extend a very special 'thank you' to her caregiver, Linda Buford, who has been instrumental in the care, companionship and much compassion given to Viola.
Viola will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed greatly by all.
A visitation is being held on Monday, March 4, 2024, Riemann Family Funeral Home, 13872 Lemoyne Blvd., in West Jackson County, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers memorials to your favorite charity will be appreciated. Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery immediately following service.
