Vernell Breland

Nora Vernell Shattles Breland was born in Brooklyn, Mississippi to Delanie Bertrand Shattles and John Richard Shattles, who of course preceded her in death along with her 8 siblings: Harvey Shattles, Verlena Wallace, Hubert Shattles, Alma Meyers, Elom Shattles, Margorie Fairley, Ramond Shattles, and Yvonne Hopstein. Nell was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jimmie Davis Breland.
She is survived by two daughters, Gloria Breland and Selina Breland (Jack Pickering), granddaughter, Ashley Trahan (Dylan Keohane), great grandson, Wren Keohane, step great granddaughter, Raven Keohane, and step grandson, John Pickering.
Nell's early aspirations to be a journalist gave way to raising a family, and after many years of military travel, she and Jimmie settled in Ocean Springs circa 1964. She had many interests including rocks and plants and photography, but it was her love of books (lots of books!) and genealogy that eased her wanderlust, allowing her to travel to so many places and times.  In later years, friends and family (Brenda, Derrel, Debbie, and her beloved Shirley) provided priceless opportunities to run the roads, research ancestors, and run the roads some more. Her enthusiasm will be missed, as will her Rum Cake.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Greenbriar Nursing Center and Kindred Hospice for their compassion, patience and remarkable care. Also, to Karen Saffle for your ministry and friendship to Nell.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2019, with a visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the 2:00 p.m. service at First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs, 921 Ocean Ave. Ocean Springs.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Vernell Breland to The Stephen Ministry of First Presbyterian of OS or Friends Ocean Springs Library.
