Mrs. Vera Carter, 97, was a native of Greenwood, MS and was reared in Charleston, MS. She moved to Gulfport in 1926.
Mrs. Carter and her husband owned Carter Furniture Company in the 1940's and 1950's. She was a Medical Technologist for twenty years, working at Memorial Hospital and then for Dr. Ben Kitchings. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Gulfport.
Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Carter; parents, J.M. O'Neal and Florence Taylor O'Neal; brother, James Taylor O'Neal; granddaughter, Patricia McMullen; grandson, Taylor Carter; two uncles, Dr. J.T. Taylor and Capt. William Dudley Taylor, USN; two aunts, Nella Taylor Cooper and Jeannie Taylor Perkins.
Survivors include a son, James Rufus Carter and wife Celeste, Gulfport; two daughters, Mrs. Jane McMullen, Memphis, TN and Mrs. Lynn Young and husband Jerry of Gulfport; five grandchildren: Fred McMullen, Jon Carter, Jennie Carter Grammer and husband Kirk, Lynnell Young Landry and husband Sean, and Joy Young McClellan and husband Blane; three great-grandchildren: Jon Taylor, Conrad Grammer, and Maren Celeste McClellan; cousins: Charlotte Cooper, Biloxi and Taliaferro Cooper, San Antonio, TX; and a niece, Lyndall Kane, Greenville, SC.
A graveside service will be 2 pm Sunday, February 19, 2006 in Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport.
