Van Stanford Bookout, Sr., age 78, of Saucier, passed away on June 1, 2008 in Gulfport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Sandra Picard, and two brothers, Dan Bookout and Don Bookout.
Mr. Bookout is survived by his wife, Emma (Jean) Byrd Bookout; three children, Stacey Reynolds and her husband, David, of Rocklin, CA, Stan Bookout of Minneapolis, MN, and Shad Bookout of Orlando, FL; two grandsons, Alex and Kevin Reynolds, both of Rocklin, CA; two step sons, Paul and Glen Terrell of Gulfport; two step daughters, Celeste Campbell of Molino, FL and Stacy Cook of Pensacola, FL; nine step grandchildren; and two great grandchilren.
He was a graduate of Springdale, Arkansas, High School and attended the University of Arkansas, Pearl River Community College, and the University of Southern Mississippi. He was a past district manager for Commercial Credit Corp., a past Vice President of Coast Federal Savings and Loan (predecessor to Magnolia Federal Bank), and past induatrial trainer for G.E. Plastics, Inc., Bay St. Louis.
Mr. Bookout was past president of Long Beach Jr. High School PTA and Gulfport Noon Lions Club; past zone chairman of Lions International and a delegate to the International Lions Convention, Mexico City, 1972; past Exalted Ruler, BPOElks #978; a delegate to the Elks Grand Lodge Convention, Chicago, 1973 and a state chairman for the Elks National Service Commission; a representative of the Veterans Administration Volunteer Services; member and master mason, Orange Grove Lodge #635; member and Knight's Templar, York Rites Bodies; member Joppa Shrine Temple; member and past treasurer, Joppa Clown Unit; past member and past patron, Order of the Eastern Star, Harmony Chapter #397; member of the Eastern Star, Handsboro Chapter #374; member and past president of the Star Twirlers Square Dance Club; member, AARP, Gulf Coast Chapter; member, Retired Senior Volunteer Program; former member of the Nugent United Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and Finance Committee; and current member of Poplarhead United Methodist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in the Korean War.
He was a kind and gentle man with a emerald sparkle in his green eyes and loved by his family and those he touched.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM where friends may call from 9:30 AM until service time at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. An Eastern Star Serice will preceed the service. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery with military honors and a Masonic Graveside service.
