Ulrich S. Amos, age 95, of Gulfport, MS., and husband of the late Marvin P. Amos, passed away peacefully at his home in Gulfport, MS, on October 20, 2009.
Mr. Amos was born August 5, 1914 in New Orleans, LA and had been a resident of Handsboro, MS and then Gulfport, MS since 1918.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gray B. and Mary L. Amos; his brothers, Bevil T. and Darwin R. Amos; and his wife of 61 years.
Mr. Amos is survived by his two sons, Ulrich S. Amos, II and Hawes P. Amos; two grandchildren, A. Steven and Jennifer Y. Amos; and two great grandchildren, Austin and Stirling Amos.
Mr. Amos was a loving husband and father that enjoyed life and giving back to the community when possible. Over his life, he was a NRA Rifle and Pistol Instructor, and an American Red Cross Water Safety and First Aid Instructor. Until injuries prevented such, he was an avid sailor and was member of the Gulfport Yacht Club since 1939. A Charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Bayou View, Gulfport. where served as the Treasurer and Boy Scout Commissioner/Committee member. He was also an active member of the Krewe of Neptune and the Krewe of Les Cavaliers where he reined as King.
During WWII, he served as an Intelligence Officer and Tank Platoon Commander, earning the Bronze Star and various service/campaign medals. His combat action included North Africa, across portions of Europe, and into Germany with General Patton's 3rd
Armored Division. He was on the front lines at the Battle of the Bulge, and a Liberator of Stalag 7A and Dachau Concentration Camp. After the WWII surrender, he was tasked to track down war criminals.
Immediate family members of Mr. Amos may attend a graveside service at 9:00 AM Friday, October 23, 2009, at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
