Tony Elmo (Moe) Shifalo, Sr., age 87, of Kiln, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in Gulfport.
Mr. Shifalo was born in New Orleans, LA and was a native of the Kiln.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony A. Shifalo and Julia Wise Shifalo; and a sister, Edna Shifalo Redmond.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene O. Shifalo of Gulfport; two sons, Tony E. Shifalo, Jr. and his wife Gale Holloway Shifalo of Hattiesburg and Jesse M. Shifalo and his wife Suzanne Boatman Shifalo of Bay St. Louis; four granddaughters; one grandson; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; and one sister, Iris Shifalo Stern of New Orleans,LA.
He was a Southern Baptist SBC, and a charter member of Gulfport Heights Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years. He loved to work around the church.
Mr. Shifalo graduated from St. John High School, Gulfport, in 1942. He worked for Standard Refrigation in Gulfport and Gulfport Airplane Repair in 1942. He was a graduate of Coyne Electric School of Chicago in 1942 and the Radio Institute of Technology (Electrical), New York City, in 1943.
A World War II veteran, he was a staff sergeant with the Corps of Engineers 1090th
Engineers Specialist Utility Co. He served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Naples, Foggio, Rome, Arno, southern France, Rhineland, and central Europe (six campaigns).
He retired after 66 years in good standing with the Electrical Union 903 IBEW and was a registered Senior Engineer Technician ICET, retired.
He retired from Civil Service at USCBC, Gulfport, after 31 years with many outstanding performance awards in the Public Works Dept. He worked as an Electrical / Mechanical Inspector and Planner Estimator in the Maintenance Control Branch of Public Works.
He had an old saying while he lived in the Kiln: """"Going down to the Bay and up to the Kiln"""".
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and camping.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport. The funeral service will be held on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
