Tomiko Ohi Burdick, age 72, of Gulfport, MS, passed away peacefully at her home January 28, 2010 with family and friends by her side.
Tomiko was born in Tokyo, Japan, on March 31, 1937. She moved to the United States in 1972 after she was married and became a nationalized U.S. citizen. As a military wife she enjoyed traveling and learning the cultures of many parts of the world.
Tomiko was an accomplished artist of floral and fashion design. She graduated from Bunka University in 1955 with a BacheloraÌââ¢s Degree in Fashion Design, she received her MasteraÌââ¢s of Arts degree from the University of Maryland in 1965, she earned a degree from the Benz School of floral design at Texas A&M in 1987, and certification from Phil RullodaaÌâËs School of Floral Design in 1990. She also was accepted and studied at the International Assistant School in Japan during which time she befriended Frank Sinatra and Keely Smith. Tomiko also studied extensively and mastered the art of Ikebana floral arrangements and Japanese (Kimekomi) doll making while in Japan. She has received numerous awards and designations for her floral designs including the title of Mississippi designer of the year. She was employed at the Beau Rivage department of floral design.
Tomiko was also well known for her love of all animals and made it her lifeaÌââ¢s mission to help any animal in need that crossed her path. She was also a great supporter of the Humane Society of South Mississippi.
Tomiko was a devoted mother who loved her family and friends immensely. She was a true inspiration to all who knew her and always encouraged others by saying aÌâÅyou can do it.aÌâ
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rinichiro Ohi and Ito Kazawa Ohi of Tokyo, Japan; and her grandparents Yoshiro Kazawa and Princess Kazawa of Tokyo, Japan.
She is survived by her children, Rinichiro Larry Burdick and Dr. Felicia Tomiko Burdick both of Gulfport, MS; her brother Takuzo Ohi and his wife Mutsuko Ohi of Chiba-Ken, Japan; her grandson Corbin Bellande of Gulfport, MS; aÌâÅadoptedaÌâ grandson Nathan Hansen of Gulfport, MS; and all her beloved four legged children.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 5, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at Southern Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Biloxi.
