Thelma Barnes Weeks, age 77, born in Prentiss County Mississippi passed away in Gulfport on Thursday, June 9, 2011.
Mrs. Weeks was born to Autie and Bertha Hutchens in 1933. She attended Wheeler High School and then graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She furthered her education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and received her nursing anesthesia degree in 1963. Thelma worked throughout North Mississippi until her retirement in 1998. Thelma and her husband Ray moved to Gulfport, MS in 1998.
Mrs. Weeks was an avid gardener, member of the Audubon Society, and an outdoors woman with a passion for travel with their Winnebago Club. Thelma took every opportunity to expand her knowledge with enthusiasm and zest for life. Thelma had a passion for entertaining either while hosting dinner parties for the elite or spending time with family pool-side.
Thelma was preceded in her death by her parents, her sister, Gladys Hodges and her brother, Donald Hutchens.
Thelma is survived by her husband of 29 years, Ray Weeks; her children, Joy Crowley of Gulfport and Christopher Barnes of Winston-Salem, NC; her siblings, June Burdick of Chicago, IL and Vergie Knight of Daphne, AL; 3 grandchildren, Dana Dawson Desharnais of Gulfport, Abigail Barnes, and Maxwell Barnes of Winston-Salem; 1 great grandchild, David Desharnais Jr. of Gulfport; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; her stepchildren, Dianne Martin of Hattiesburg, MS, Debbie Hilton of Avon Park, FL and Dr. Wallace Weeks of Dalton, GA; 7 step grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren.
Thelma's loving nature and comforting smile will be missed and always remembered. She treasured the small things in life, put her family's needs above her own, and she will live on in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday June 14, 2011, from 1pm until 2pm at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport.
A graveside service will follow at 2:30pm at the National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS.
