Shirley Ann Long Sweeney, 82, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 in Gulfport.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, William F. Sweeney; her parents, Walter and Beulah Long; three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her two sisters, Sue Savoie (Francis) of Carencro, LA, and Jeri Laird (Joe) of Brandon, MS; her sister-in-law, Reba Long of Mountain Home, AR; and several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was a military wife for 32 years while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. During this time she earned her private pilots license (though only her husband would fly with her). Shirley was a very accomplished and successful artist. She enjoyed taking art classes and making lots of artist friends. She sold some of her paintings and hung many in businesses in Biloxi and Gulfport. Painting was her passion.
She was a member of the Gulf Coast Art Association since 1978 and served as president, vice-president and secretary. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, DAV, Fleet Reserve Auxiliary, Ocean Springs Art Association and the Singing River Art Association.
Shirley was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gulfport, where she was president of the Ladies Guild in 1977, 1986 and 1994.
Shirley enjoyed art, gardening, traveling and antiques.
Special thanks to Wayne Dacomb for his help and care the past seventeen years. Shirley's goal was to reach the age of 70, which she did and more. Her message to family and friends:
"I did not rust out - I wore out. I tried to do everything I could. In remembering me, know that I enjoyed life fully and would like to remind everyone of smiles and happiness, enjoying nature and knowing so many artists."
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 12290 Depew Road, Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour prior. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Biloxi at 12:30 p.m.
