Shirley J. McConnell, age 93, of Las Vegas, formerly of Gulfport, passed away on January 30, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell McConnell; 2 sons, William McConnell and Dennis McConnell; a daughter, Susie Herrington; and a sister, Jerry Sue Hargrove.
She is survived by her son, Richard McConnell; a sister, Doris Ann Carleton; 4 grandchildren, Tiffiny McConnell, Kristy Logan, Josh McConnell, and Rebecca Ashby; 9 great-grandchildren, Sutton McConnell, Wrennon McConnell, Harper McConnell, Hutson McConnell, Katie Ashby, Megan Ashby, Lillian Ashby, Patrick Ashby, and Grey Logan; a cousin, Betty Owens; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mrs. McConnell was married to Russell W. McConnell for 77 years. She passed away a couple of days before her anniversary to be with her loving husband in heaven who was also a wonderful and gracious father to 4 children 3 of which preceded her in death.
Shirley spent her last 5 years in Las Vegas with her son, Richard McConnell, and daughter-in-law, Debbie McConnell. Shirley lived at Silver Skye at Deer Springs assisted living home for the past 4 years where she made many friends and a new family who will truly miss her. Some of her closest friends were Connie Ricciardelli, Woody Wilson and her primary caregiver, Angela Tabor, who she truly loved spending time with on a daily basis. She enjoyed going to the casino and having dinner out with her Las Vegas family.
Shirley was employed by the Department of Defense (United States Air Force) for well over 30 years and served as Director of Entertainment at Keesler Air Force Base and 2 tours in Japan at Kadena Air Force Base.
She was a member of the Grace Memorial Baptist Church in Gulfport and enjoyed attending services on a regular basis.
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 10am - 11am at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport. The funeral service will be at 11 am in the chapel. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
