Shirley E. Harmon, age 85, died at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Sarasota, Florida on Saturday, December 8, 2007 of natural causes. She had been a resident of Sarasota since 2005.
She was born on January 7, 1922 in Worcester, Massachusetts to the late Laura T. and E. Clifton Moore. Shirley served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, and was stationed in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she met and later married George Harmon.
Shirley was a military wife, traveling, raising her family, and playing, teaching and organizing, bridge wherever the Air Force sent the family. This included Dover AFB, Delaware; Stewart AFB, New York; Presque Isle AFB; Maine; Itazuki AFB, Japan; Tyndall AFB, Florida; and Keesler AFB on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where the family settled in 1959.
Shirley is survived by her son Russell and his wife, Karen (Steinhoff); her daughter Crystal and her husband, Royal Bruce; her son Brian and his wife, Lynn (Andrews); six grandchildren, Christopher Harmon and his wife Tanya, Brian Harmon and his wife Becki, George Franklin Harmon, Tracie Vestal, Brendan Harmon, and Jonathan Harmon; and four great-grandchildren, Cameron and Paris Harmon and William and Baby Thomas Harmon.
Funeral services for Shirley Elizabeth Harmon will be held at 10:15 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2007 at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi. The Rev. Tim Wilson will officiate. Friends may visit one hour prior. Interment will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery where Shirley will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, George of 60 years.
