Shirley Louise Buterbaugh
August 29, 1956 -November 1,2022
Shirley passed peacefully at her home in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Shirley was born to Charlotte and Jimmy Ziglar, who preceded her in death. Shirley is survived by her son Nathan and daughter Amy, grandchildren Garrett, Tristan, Peyton and Dylan, her sisters Jane and Vivian. Shirley was a devoted sister, parent, grandmother, and friend.
Shirley was raised in Robertsdale, AL and was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church. She attended Robertsdale School 1st -12th grades, where she was an avid cheerleader and softball player. Sports and staying active was especially important to Shirley. As a devoted mother, she made certain her children participated in any sport they wanted to play, coaching her daughter in cheerleading and softball, attending every soccer, football, and baseball game her son played.
She worked for the Federal Government for 35 years hired as a mail carrier, working her way to a GS-14. managing numerous employees throughout the Southeast region. She was responsible for the deployment of FEMA staff to Homeland emergencies such as the Oklahoma City bombing, September 11 terrorist attacks and numerous other disasters. Shirley had a true passion for her career at FEMA and it showed in her commitment to her employees and work. She was able to travel the country meeting new friends and visiting places she may not have had the opportunity to visit otherwise. Retiring was a difficult decision for her, which she did June 2022.
Shirley moved to Gulfport MS where she purchased a condominium on the beach. A dream fulfilled after many years of wanting to fall asleep and waking up to the sounds of the ocean.
She had very few wishes in her final stage of life, spending valuable time with her family and friends, being able to look out the window, seeing the white sand while hearing the ocean, and finally a few Wendy’s chocolate frostys and Bushwhackers.
It's not goodbye, it’s until we see you again
