Sheldon Jules Babischkin, affectionately known as Shelley, passed away suddenly at his home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on October 2, 2024, at the age of 81 after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 28, 1943, and lived a life rich with purpose, love, and dedication.
Shelley was a proud veteran of the US Air Force, where he served with honor before pursuing a career as a draftsman and registered land surveyor with several engineering firms along the beautiful Gulf Coast. His professional journey was marked by a meticulous attention to detail and a passion for his work that inspired those around him.
A graduate of Miami Dade High School and Miami Dade Junior College, Shelley carried the values of education with him throughout his life. He was not just committed to his career; he was dedicated to his family, always striving to support them in every possible way.
Shelley’s interests outside of work were simple yet profound. He cherished the time spent fishing, and nothing brought him more joy than attending various events in support of his beloved grandchildren. His heart swelled with pride as he watched them grow, and he delighted in being a part of their lives.
He leaves behind a loving family that includes his devoted wife of 57 years, Margaret Helen (nee Lee) Babischkin; his son Phillip Babischkin; and his daughter Rene (Mike) McElroy. He adored his grandchildren Ashley (Stephen) Payne, Tyler (Jessica) Babischkin, Katie (Holton) Johnson, Emma McElroy, Michael McElroy and Carrissa Babischkin, they will forever hold dear the memories of their cherished grandfather, as will his great-grandchildren Stephen Payne, Max Payne, and very soon to be Annessa Rose.
Shelley is also survived by his brother Allen Babischkin, and a special nephew Peter Lee, and several additional nieces and nephews Marcy Babischkin Kashansky, Francey Babischkin, Gina Spencer, Sean Babischkin, Mark Babischkin, Jeffrey Babischkin, and Amie Babischkin. They, along with all who knew him, will miss his warm smile and compassionate spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Rose (nee Blumenfeld) Babischkin; his mother-in-law Lucretia Lee; and his brothers Gilbert Babischkin and Dennis Babischkin, as well as his sister, Gayle LaRosa. Their memories now embrace him in peace.
As we remember Shelley, let us celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love for family, a commitment to his profession, and a passion for the simple joys of life. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him.
The family would like to thank everyone for the continued support and prayers. Dad was loved by many family members and friends.
