Mr. Samuel E. Sterling, age 76, resident of Waveland, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010.
Mr. Sterling was born in West Virginia to Earl and Addie Sterling. He served in the United States Army as a photographer. He retired from the McNeil Corporation in Akron, OH before moving to Waveland. Mr. Sterling will be best remembered by family, neighbors, friends, and strangers after Hurricane Katrina as a source of help and hope. Mr. Sterling assisted friends and strangers alike in obtaining needed items to help them restore their lives and homes.
Mr. Sterling was preceded in death by his parents; children, Steve Kawczk, Samuel Patrick Sterling, Deborah McKenzie, and Russell Douglas; siblings, Winston Sterling, Paul Sterling, Elenor Crabtree, Jean Jones, Helen Pendergast, Ellen Bucklew, and Joanne Sterling.
He is survived by his wife, Viola Lee Douglas Sterling of Waveland; children, Timothy Sterling (Barb) of Riverside, CA, Teri Chalfant (Rob) of Akron, OH, Melanie Fouasnon of Akron, OH, Sam Douglas (Tina) of Denham Springs, LA, Theresa Duprey (Fred) of Waveland, and Joseph Douglas (Theresa) of Mobile, AL; sisters, Ruth Bolyard of Morgantown, WV, Mathilda Bonifield of Elyria, OH, Barbara Greaser of Kingwood, WV, and Geraldine Brown of Elyria, OH; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Diamondhead Baptist Church, with Dr. Randy Rich officiating. A gathering will follow in the church's fellowship hall.
