Samuel Cates

November 18, 1945 — July 19, 2024

Gulfport, Mississippi

Samuel Cates, a long-time resident of Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away among his family on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the age of 78 in Gulfport. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Samuel was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Cates (passed away July 2013), with whom he shared a deep and enduring love. Their bond was a beacon of strength and commitment, and together they raised a beautiful family.

He is survived by his three children: Amy Rupert, Bethany Cates and Charles Cates. Samuel's legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Hayden Rupert, Ashton Rupert, and Dorothea Cates-Foster, and his great-grandchildren, Rowan Rupert and Shiloh Rupert.

Before his retirement, Samuel worked in security at the Grand Casino Gulfport, where he enjoyed his co-workers for many years. Samuel was a veteran of the Air National Guard.

A lifelong voracious reader, Samuel consumed thousands of books throughout his lifetime, always eager to learn and explore new worlds through literature. His love for Motown music brought him joy. Above all, Samuel loved his wife and children fiercely, a love that was the cornerstone of his life.

To celebrate Samuel's memory, we suggest contributing to any of his preferred charities. He was a proud supporter of USM, and contributed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House Charities. To highlight his and Sandra’s love for animals, any contributions in their honor can also be made to the Humane Society of South Mississippi.

A visitation to honor Samuel's life will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach, MS. A graveside service will take place the following day, on Friday, July 26, 2024, at Evergreen Cemetery, 28th Street, Gulfport at 10:00 AM.

Samuel Cates will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, family, and dedication will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In remembrance of Samuel's kindness, dedication, and love, let us gather to celebrate a life well-lived and a legacy that will endure through the memories he leaves behind. May he rest in peace knowing that he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
