Sam Joseph Surian of Woolmarket, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2011, he was 86 years old.
Mr. Surian was born in Biloxi and raised on Cedar Street. He attended St. Michael School on Point Cadet and worked for Kuluz brothers' seafood before joining the Navy in January 1942. He was a World War II veteran. He spent time in the Mediterranean Sea, Africa and the South Pacific. While in the South Pacific, his ship was torpedoed. He and other seamen were afloat at sea for six days and spent 10 days on a deserted island before being rescued. He worked offshore on the oil rigs for a number of years before going to work for Ingalls for 30 years.
He and Hazel traveled all of the United States and into Canada and Mexico. A favorite pastime of his was growing garlic which he sold to local groceries. Every year he tried to make them ""bigger and better"".
Mr. Surian was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Hazel F. Surian; his great grandson Cole Brewer of Saucier; his parents Doma and Sam Surian; two brothers, Nick and Matthew; six sisters, Katherine Pitalo, Jacobina Adams, Leopolda Taker, Matilda Neumann, Adele Kuluz and Mary Surian
He is survived by his daughter, Katherine Jennings of Gulfport; his son, James U. Leuenberger and his wife June of Long Beach; six grandchildren, Donna Brewer (Frank) of Saucier, Susan Scarborough (Ricky) of Lizana, Keith Scarborough of Gulfport, Jamie Leuenberger (Jordan), Jessica Spillers (Frankie) and Wesley Leuenberger, all of Long Beach; four great grandchildren, Candace Brewer (B.J.) of Saucier, Logan Leuenberger, Samatha Spillers and Jordyn Leuenberger of Long Beach; his special nephews, Nick Surian of Biloxi, Buddy Pitalo of Bay St. Louis; special nieces Pat Caillavet, Joyce Glenn and Gloria Cruso of Biloxi, Jane Ann Roth of New Jersey; he is also survived by Mark Newmann (Kerry) of Ocean Springs; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 11:30 AM at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Rd., Biloxi, with visitation from 10:30 AM until service.
Burial with military honors will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
