Ms. Salome Alexandria McCaffrey, 26, of Gulfport, MS, declared her independence on Sunday, July 4, 2010.
Born December 25, 1983, on the coldest Christmas day of the century, Salome had SMA I (Infantile Lou GehrigaÌââ¢s disease), leaving her quadriplegic, she was known for her abilities, not her disabilities. Although she couldnaÌââ¢t pick up a pen, she was an artist. She drew and painted many pictures using slight movement of only one finger and a lot of patience. With the help of others she saw her designs come to life. Her joy filled every room even as she entered.
SalomeaÌââ¢s love of God and her faith was unyielding. The aura of the Lord was always around her. Even in her most weakened stage you could see God working in her. She loved to dance before the Lord as the anointing fell upon her inviting others to join her at the altar.
During her life she was involved in many wonderful organizations such as the ChildrenaÌââ¢s Miracle Network Telethon, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Make A Wish Foundation, Camp Boggy Creek (Paul NewmanaÌââ¢s A Hole in the Wall Camps), Ventilation Assisted Children's Center Camp (VACC) of Miami, FL, and Vent Love, Inc. She made countless friends and changed the lives of many. Her ultimate dream was to build a camp locally on the coast for the disabled.
Christmas Day may have been her birthday, but the gift she most wanted was to give to others. Salome had a great love for animals. She dreamed of training dogs to be pet therapy dogs for the disabled. She and her Yorkshire terrier, Sparky, had recently graduated from pet therapy school. She has had many pets through the years that brought her great joy including an orphaned baby squirrel named Joey.
Salome was preceded into heaven by her most beloved Great-Grandma, Connie Smith of Loxley, AL; her Pawpaw John (Jack) Oliver Powell of Stockton, AL; her Granddaddy Stanley McCaffrey, Sr.; her Grandma Aimee and Rawley Martin.
Salome is survived by her parents, Stanley Alexander, Jr. and Glenda Deborah (Debbie) McCaffrey; three sisters, Sherry Lynn Nelson of Corpus Christi, TX, Kimberly Ann Sartin, Jani Renee McCaffrey, and her honorary sister and best friend, Carmen Prieto of Miami, Florida. Her Grandmother, Maudie Wisniewski.
