Ruth Holley Latimer Ramsay Campbell passed away on February 19, 2011 at Lakeview Nursing Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, and it is with great sadness that the Eubanks/Hardy family announces her death. At the time of her death Ruth was surrounded by family and her dear and loving friend, Lovie Williams and the caring staff of Lakeview.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Latimer Hood and nieces Anne Hood Eubanks and her husband Verkuel, of Rockville, Maryland and Yvonne Hood Hardy and her husband, Bill, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and 50 nieces/nephews, great-nieces/nephews, great-great nieces/nephews and great-great-great nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Walter Holley Latimer and Mary Adele Latil Latimer; sister, Adele Winona Latimer; her first husband, Keble S. Ramsay and her second husband, Stannie Campbell; nephew Lewis W. Hood, III and great nephew Lewis W. Hood, IV.
Ruth was born July 7, 1914 to Walter and Adele in Back Bay, Biloxi, Mississippi.
Ruth Graduated from Biloxi High School and attended Harrison-Stone-Jackson Junior College , now known as Perkinston Jr College, completing the ""Course of Study in Piano"", graduating and receiving her Diploma in 1933.
A ""Bachelor of Music"" degree was awarded to Ruth at Mississippi Women's College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on May 21, 1935, having performed her Graduate Recital at the College on May 1, 1935. In 1953, Ruth earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education and Supervision from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Ruth had a distinguished career in education, accumulating 41 ½ years as a teacher and principal. 34 ½ years was within the Gulfport Municipal Separate School System and for 25 of these years she was principal at the Central Elementary School and Mississippi City Elementary School, retiring in 1977.
Ruth's first teaching job was in 1935-1936, teaching music at D'Iberville in the Harrison County School System: 1936-1940 - first and second grades at Gorenflo Elementary School Biloxi School System; 1941- 1942 - D'Iberville and Orange Grove - second grade - Harrison County; 1942-1953 - East Ward Elementary School Gulfport -first and fifth grades; 1953 -1964 Principal, Central Elementary - Gulfport School System; 1964-1977 Principal, Mississippi City Elementary - Gulfport School System; and in 1977 retired as Principal of Mississippi City Elementary School.
Among Ruth's many accomplishment and activities include former President of the State Department of Elementary Principals, and the Southeastern Department of Elementary Principals; she was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Teachers' Society, and a member of the First Methodist Church in Gulfport, Mississippi.
The funeral service will he held Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 11:00 am, with visitation for family and friends one hour prior, at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Gulfport.
