Russell Leroy Newland, Jr., age 76 of Long Beach, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 4:05 p.m., leaving behind his loving wife, Gertrude """"Trudy"""" Gifford Newland; two children; a son, Russell Leroy Newland III and his wife, Diana Lynn of Webster, TX; a daughter, Patricia Diane Stephens and her husband Kelly of Huntington Beach, CA; two grandchildren, Natalie Rose Stephens and Kevin Randall Stephens; one sister, Dolores Landers of Dallas, WV; two sisters-in-law, Ida Gifford Norwood of Long Beach and Estelle Gifford Jackson of Webster, TX; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mr. Newland was preceded in death by his parents, Russell Leroy Newland, Sr. and Mary Lucirn Newland; two brothers, Bobby Gene Newland and Cecil Denny Newland, and two sisters, Alice Bennett and Faye Riggle.
He grew up in West Virginia inspired by his first love of hunting and fishing. He spent eight years in the US Air Force, where he met his wife of 54 years, and pursued his college education. He became an electronics engineer for the Federal Aviation Agency, ultimately becoming responsible for all FAA Radar Installations throughout the South. He retired after 30 years with the government, part of that time he was on loan to the United Nations working with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) helping to develop aviation worldwide, including Taiwan, Jordan, Iraq, Bangkok, and Yemen. He finally settled in Long Beach, where he built his retirement home.
He became an active member of the Long Beach Masonic Lodge #500, Long Beach Chapter No. 306, Order of the Eastern Star, MS Coast Power Squadron, and the Long Beach Historical Society. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Long Beach. He was a man of his word, dedicated to his family and friends and an enthusiast for hunting, fishing, sailing, and woodworking. He will be truly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Long Beach, where family and friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Long Beach City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, 208 Pine Street, Long Beach, MS 39560.
