Ruben Quero, age 73, of Diamondhead, MS, passed away in New Orleans, LA on February 8, 2022.

Ruben was a native of Ventura, CA.  He received a BS in Psychology, and an AA in Accounting.  He retired as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Airforce after 21 years and retired from Ochsner Health systems as a Respiratory Therapist after 25 years.

While in the Air Force he earned the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, NCO Professional Military Education Ribbon with 1 device, Combat Readiness Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal with 2 devices,, AF Longevity Service Award with 4 devices, National Defense Service Medal, AF Overseas Service Short Tour Ribbon with 1 device, AF Training Ribbon, AF Outstanding Unit Award with 5 devices, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with 1 device, AF Good Conduct Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Metal and AF Commendation Medal with 1 device.

Ruben was an author with a book published entitled “Ten Twists”, he was an accomplished folk artist, avid gardener, and an extensive stamp collector. He enjoyed collecting aquarium fish, mariachi music, dancing, photography, calligraphy, and Taekwondo.

Ruben was a member of the Democratic Party, a distinguished member of the Human Rights Campaign, Toastmasters member, Air Force Sergeants Association Life member and the Air Force Association Life member.

Ruben was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Quero; his father, Cirelo Quero; his sister, Patricia Quero; and his nephew, Fernando Montgomery. He is survived by his spouse of four years and had a long, happy life together for forty-four years, Gerald L. Ferguson; his sisters, Yolanda Montgomery (Mickey), Rita Quero, Victoria Escoto (Mike), Virginia Flores (Ramon), Frances Steen (Rick); his brother, Larry Quero (Wendy); his nephews, Michael Escoto, Lawrence Quero and Benjamin Quero; his nieces, Veronica Cantu, and Maya Olsen.

Ruben was a compassionate person that was always there to help everyone. He had an infectious sense of humor and would brighten everyone’s day.  He had many friends of diverse backgrounds and could embrace different cultural aspects of those he met.  His love of traveling took him all over the world.  Ruben valued, loved, and encouraged them to be their best.  He was a natural educator and could positively communicate his knowledge to help others.  Ruben loved his many Boston Terriers, Quincy, Petey, Beau, Lady, Minnie, and he was amused by his 30-year-old parrot, Jocko.  Near the end of his life he rescued a puppy, Queenie, through the Humane Society of South Mississippi whom he loved and adored.

His family applauds Ruben’s fantastic life.
