Dr. Roland Francis Samson, Jr. recently passed away at home in Pass Christian with family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 17, from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 Beach Blvd East, Long Beach with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 1:00 p.m.
Roland was born in 1934 in New Orleans. During childhood years, he lived in Westwego, Louisiana. He moved to Baton Rouge and attended grade school and high school at University High on the LSU campus, where he graduated in 1951. Roland attended LSU from 1951 to 1954 and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He subsequently attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans and graduated in 1958. Roland was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Sheard-Sanford Award for basic research in clinical pathology. He received specialty training and was certified in anatomic and clinical pathology in 1963 at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Roland spent two years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Seattle, Washington. He was a member of the College of American Pathologists, Society of Clinical Pathologists, and the American Association of Blood Banks. In 1965, Roland entered practice in Jackson, Mississippi, where he co-founded Sturgis-Samson Pathology Laboratory with his longtime friend and partner, Dr. George M. Sturgis.
Roland was a faithful Catholic and attended Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach and Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Pass Christian.
Roland was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. During his retirement years, he also enjoyed making his highly sought-after duck calls, which he often gave to local fundraisers and friends as a way to connect people to the outdoors. If you are lucky enough to have one of Roland's duck calls, you own a labor of his love -- a beautiful gift of craftsmanship and sound.
Roland is survived by his wife, Susan Carter Samson; three children, Elizabeth Hale Samson of Chester, New Hampshire, Roland Francis Samson, III (Katharine) of Pass Christian, Mississippi, and Stephen Gray Samson (Ginger) of Madison, Mississippi; five grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Poppie", Gray Samson and Jordan Samson of Madison, Mississippi, and Caroline Samson, John Samson and Madeline Samson of Pass Christian, Mississippi; step-sister, Monica Barber Gornell of Allendale, New Jersey; and Godchildren, John Cheek, Justin Gornell, Sandra Sturgis Giddens, and Colin Bush. Roland was preceded in death by his parents, Roland F. Samson and Thelma Pitre Samson Barber, grandfather, Vic A. Pitre, grandmother, Jewell A. Pitre, and step-sister, Mary Jo Barber Fitzgerald.
The family would like to thank all of the caregivers who provided care and assistance to Roland over the years, including most recently, Nicki Pascley and Kare-in-Home Home Health and Kare-in-Home Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to LSU Alumni Association, 3838 North Lakeshore Drive, Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808.
