Robert ""Woody"" Woods, age 70, and a resident of Biloxi, passed away on Wednesday, December 22, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Biloxi.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother and adopted mother, Ms. Hattie B. Earls; his mother, Ms. Harriett Birdon; and his father, MGySgt. W. Michael Woods.
His is survived by the family matriarch, Ms. Rosa Lee Sims of Natchez, MS; three brothers, L. Michael Woods and wife Linda of Grand Rapids, MI, M. David Woods and wife Donna of Upper-Marlboro, MD, and Michael Wilson Woods of Savannah, GA; his nieces, Shona Woods and Lynette Chifton; and a host of cousins.
Woody was born in Vidalia, LA, but moved to Natchez, MS at an early age to live with his grandmother. He graduated from St. Frances High School, where he learned to play the saxophone, basketball, and to broad jump. He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA and Alcorn College in Lorman, MS.
Woody joined the Air Force in 1963 and served 26 years, mostly at Keesler Air Force Base. During his time at Keesler, Woody was assigned to the Medical Center, and for 17 years held the title of Medical Service Manager. He retired from active duty in December of 1989.
Woody made his home in Biloxi and surrounded himself with many friends. He was widely known in the Greater Biloxi community, and was well liked.
A Graveside Service with full military honors will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Biloxi National Cemetery.
