Robert Thomas Smith, 61, of Gulfport passed away Sunday, February 18, 2007 after a courageous battle with Lymphoma and Leukemia.
Mr. Thomas was a native of Greenville, SC and had been a resident of the coast most of his life. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He has been employed at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College over 35 years and served as Director of Information Technology, Special Assistant to the President for Special Projects and Legislative Liason where he received many career related awards. He was a member of the following: Gulfport Yacht Club, Great Southern Golf Club, Gulfport Gridiron Club, MGCCC Alumni Association, MSU Alumni Association, MGCCC Foundation, Knight of Columbus. He was a charter member of the MS Junior College and Community College Data Processing Directors Association. He served as past-president of the following: Gulfport Jaycees, St. James School Board, St. John High School Athletic Association, Gulfport High School Baseball and Football Booster Clubs, St. James Parish Council. He was a member of Gulfport Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and was an avid golfer.
He touched many lives through his active participation in youth athletics.
He was preceded in death by his parents, BJ and Polly Oates Smith Ryan.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Beavers Smith, Gulfport, mother-in-law, Joyce R. Beavers, Gulfport, his children, Robert T. Smith, Jr., Waveland, Julie D. (Byron) Cotton, Destin, FL, Steven P. Smith, Starkville, MS, and Christopher E. Smith, Jackson, 2 sisters, Jacqueline S. (Greg) Woodcock, Biloxi, and Rebecca S. (Mike) Switzer, Gulfport.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 21, 2007 from 10 am - 12 noon at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 noon in the church.
Interment will be in Evergreen Gardens Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Willis Lott, Dr. Donie Taylor, Dr. David Drye, William Gaston Hewes, II, Gene Clark, and Kenny Rich.
