Robert Gallinghouse, Jr.

May 14, 1930 — April 11, 2019

Robert Edwin "Bob" Gallinghouse, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 11, 2019. He was 88. Born in North Little Rock, Arkansas on May 14, 1930, his parents, Robert Edwin Gallinghouse "Robbie" and Carrie Edna Hildebrand, relocated to New Orleans when Bob was six months old. Bob attended Holy Name of Mary elementary school in Algiers before attending Jesuit High School and Tulane University, where he received his B.S. degree in Chemistry.
Bob joined American Cyanamid Company in 1953 as a chemist at Cyanamid's Fortier manufacturing complex in Luling, where he held a number of technical and manufacturing management posts, including production manager and technical director, at the Fortier plant. On May 5, 1956, Bob married Elizabeth "Betty" Verret.
During the 1960s and 70s, Bob became a prominent leader in sports administration. While serving as President of the Southern Amateur Athletic Union, Bob successfully led the fight to integrate amateur athletics in the south. He also was a member of the National AAU Executive Committee, Chairman of the U.S. International Amateur Boxing Committee, a member of the U.S. Olympic Boxing Committee, and one of eight U.S. officials qualified to judge international and Olympic boxing.
The family remained in the New Orleans area until 1976, when Bob moved to Cyanamid Corporate Headquarters in Wayne, NJ to set up an Energy Department within the Materials Planning and Procuring Division. In 1981, he was assigned Director of Chemicals Group Purchasing. After a 38-year career with Cyanamid, Bob retired in 1991. He kept busy with consulting work for Cytec Industries. Bob also gave motivational speeches, drawing from the challenges he overcame as a result of his childhood polio.
After 30 years in Oakland, NJ, Bob and Betty moved to Surprise, Arizona in 2006, enjoying the company of great friends there for nine years. Continuing to make use of his sharp mind, Bob became Finance Chairman at St. Clare of Assisi. He also became Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization.
Three years ago, Bob and Betty returned home, settling in Diamondhead, Mississippi, where Bob spent his time gazing out at the golf course, entertaining family and friends, and telling everyone how to do everything - something we all will miss dearly.
Bob is survived by Betty, his wife of 62 years; four children, Robert Edwin Gallinghouse III (Carolyn), William David Gallinghouse (Kim), Nancy Gallinghouse Evars (Scott), Claire Lynn Gallinghouse; his nine grandchildren, Davis, Rachel (Jonathan Kirk), Charles, Eli, Jordan, Owen, Tyler, Emerson, Mary; his sister, Joan Gallinghouse Daigle; as well as many loving friends, cousins, in-laws, nephews, and nieces.
