EWC Richard Eugene McDonough, U.S. Navy, Ret, age 74, of Ocean Springs, passed away on July 8, 2021, in Shepherdsville, KY.
Mr. McDonough was preceded in death by his father, Ross Layton McDonough; his mother, Mildred Nellie Rexroat McDonough; 3 sisters, Virginia Mae Osborn, Janet June Burke, and Mildred Elizabeth Ann Cooper; and a brother, Lester Leroy McDonough.
He is survived by his close friend and mother of his children, Patricia Ruby McDonough; his children, Richard E. McDonough (Annalisa) and Tricia J. McDonough (Orlando Valdez); his siblings, Ross L. McDonough, Jr. (Patricia) and Rolf C. McDonough; 4 grandchildren, Matthew J. Merrithew, Alexandria P. Merrithew, Gabriel A. McDonough, and Leonardo McDonough; and other relatives and friends.
Mr. McDonough was a native of Council Bluffs, IA and was a current resident of Ocean Springs, MS. He served in the United States Navy from 1964 until his retirement in 1985 as Electronic Warfare Technician Chief Petty Officer. While in the Navy, he was an honor graduate of the Navy Electronic Warfare Technician School and received Navy Leadership Training. He received the following achievements/commendations while in the Navy: National Defense Service Medal, Battle Efficiency "E" Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and four Good Conduct Medals.
Following retirement from the Navy, He was employed with BAE Systems, Sayers and Associates, Vitro, GE, Marconi, General Dynamics, Navigation Services, and Martin Marietta. He was a member of the USS John W. Thomason (DD-760) Association, Winnebago-Itasca Military Travelers, USS Yorktown (CG-48) Pre-commission Crew (Plank Owner), Veterans of Foreign Wars, Red Cross Disaster Relief, Fleet Reserve Association, and the Tin Can Sailors.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, RVing, and restoring his 1956 Chevy Bel Air.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 15, 2021, from 10 AM - 12 PM at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 13872 Lemoyne Blvd, West Jackson County. The funeral service will be at 12 PM in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery.
