Richard Hayes Evans (Dick), 79, of Long Beach, Mississippi passed away due to a heart attack at his home Monday, April 14, 2014.
Mr. Evans was born in Elkhart, Indiana, on August 6, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents Elizabeth Hayes and Harry Leroy Evans of Elkhart, IN; his brother Harry Evans, Jr. of Elkhart, IN; his brother in-law, Arthur Kane, of Greenwood Village, CO.; and his beloved wife, Margaret B. Evans, of Long Beach, MS.
He was survived by his son, Eric H. Evans and his wife, Dorothy L. Evans, of Bardstown, KY; his two granddaughters, Ericka L. Evans and Ellyn L. Evans, also of Bardstown KY; sister, Judy Kane, of Greenwood Village, CO; brother, Tom Evans, and his wife, Jean Evans, of Mesa City, AZ; and sister in-law, Donna Evans, of Elkhart, IN, as well as survived many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
In 1952 at the age of sixteen Mr. Evans graduated Middlebury High School in Elkhart, IN. From a very young age he worked as a farm hand doing anything necessary. After graduating high school he worked at a bottling company for a short time. Once he found out he could attend college on the GI Bill he enlisted in the Navy in August, 1952. During his tour in the Navy he received commendations for service with National Defense, Korean Service, United Nations, and KFUC . He was placed on inactive duty with the Naval Reserves in 1955. In June, 1959 he began working for the US Naval Hydrographic Office. He participated with Operation Deep Freeze from 1960-1962. During the operation he took depth soundings and was ultimately honored by having a peninsula in Antarctica named for him. His sailed on eight naval vessels including the USS Staten Island and USS Burton Island. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in August, 1960. He was instrumental in the relocation of Navoceano's office to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi in 1975. This is when he relocated his family to Long Beach, MS. He retired in September, 1989.
Arrangements are complete at Reimann Funeral Home in Long Beach, MS. Services are to be held at the Commission Road, Long Beach location on Saturday, April 19, 2014. Visitation is to be held at 1:00 p.m. and a Memorial service will commence at 2:00 p.m. Interment is to be a private family service.
