Richard James Diamantopoulos passed peacefully from natural causes at the age of 82 in Biloxi, MS. Devoted husband, father, and community leader, Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine (nee Smith), and is survived by his son, Richard Craig Diamantopoulos of CA, daughter Andrea Bond of Poplarville, and niece Tracy Morton of Biloxi, brothers Dale and Jim Diamantopoulos of MA, grandchildren, Christopher & Rachel Bond, and Sophia & Richard Nicholas Diamantopoulos. Born in Winchendon, MA, he was a 45-year resident of Gulfport, MS.
A Vietnam veteran and devoted volunteer, he served 26 years in the US Air Force, retiring as SMSgt; he was awarded the Airman's Medal for Heroism while saving two young boys clinging to a capsized boat during a storm at sea. He later served over 25 years as Treasurer, on the Board of Directors for Keesler Federal Credit Union; and served as National Director of Lending, Credit Union National Association (CUNA). He represented CUNA and its members during visits to leaders in the halls of Congress and the US Senate.
As a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, he coordinated delivery and distribution of critical relief supplies supporting recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina and was personally congratulated by Pope Benedict I for his effort.
In lieu of flowers, please commit to bring a case of water to St. Vincent de Paul society each week, at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Biloxi.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 12 noon Tuesday, July 30, 2019, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 2090 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS with visitation from 11 am - 12 noon. Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery with an open reception immediately to follow at Port City Café, 2561 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS.
