Richard Armstrong, born on June 4, 1937, in Durant, Mississippi, passed away on November 8, 2024, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Richard's life was marked by his significant contributions to civil engineering, both in his career and through his leadership roles within the field.
He began his education at Durant High School and continued to pursue his aspirations at Mississippi State University, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering and became an avid Bulldog supporter. Richard further expanded his knowledge with a Master's in Civil Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. His professional journey included a remarkable tenure with the US Army Corps of Engineers, complemented by service in the US Army Reserves. Richard also held the prestigious position of former president of the International Committee on Large Dams (ICOLD), which allowed him to influence water management practices globally. Among his proudest accomplishments was receiving the distinguished Executive award from then-President Ronald Reagan.
Richard traveled extensively across the United States, yet his heart remained anchored in Mississippi. Upon retiring to Diamondhead, he embraced his passion for golf, actively participating in numerous tournaments.
Richard is survived by his son, Richard Armstrong, and daughter-in-law, Felecia; his granddaughter, Alyssa Armstrong; and his nephew, Guy Thronton, along with his niece, Beth Effertz, and brother-in-law, Joseph Effertz. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Margaret Armstrong, who passed just months prior in November 2023.
A memorial service to honor Richard's remarkable life and achievements will take place on November 15, 2024, at Diamondhead Community Church, located at 5301 Diamondhead Cir, Diamondhead, MS 39525, starting at 11:00 AM. He will be remembered for his unwavering spirit and dedication to making a difference in the field of civil engineering and the lives of those he touched.
