Reba Lundy

d. June 16, 2018

Reba K. Lundy, "Kitty" to friends and family, age 89, has patiently waited for the journey to her next life, and at last it has begun.  Reba lived in Vancleave with her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Tony Rupe, who lovingly cared for her with the help of her grandson Emerson Jaskar, and her oldest grandson Providence Jaskar who offered much moral support from Colorado and recently visited for a week to help out, also Tracy from KIH Hospice, Ashley Craig and Samantha Bouie from Comfort Care.
Reba came into this life in 1928, in Bethsaida, MS, when horses & buggy's were still very much in use.  She told stories of riding to town in their buggy pulled by the two family mules Niggy and Joe, who also helped plow the fields.  And yes, of times she walked to school uphill both ways and that she had no shoes.  Of that there is no doubt.  She told stories of how her family worked as sharecroppers and how hard it was picking cotton.  The house they lived in was very cold in winter because the ground could be seen through the floorboards.  She also talked about the parties they held, all the people that would come, and how someone was always there playing the fiddle.  At church on Sundays her sisters, Audrea and Arlin, would sing in harmony and it was beautiful.  She said they may have been poor but her family was close and they always had enough to eat.
Reba married Kearney Vestal Lundy when she was 16 and he 17.  Of course the families said it wouldn't last long.  They were married just shy of 60 years when Kearney passed away.
She and Kearney spent 23 years in the military, a time that spanned WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  She lived for three years in the Phillippines.  As a military wife, in a sense, Reba was also a veteran as well, in that she spent much of those years faithfully waiting for Kearney to return home and raising their two daughters in his absence.
Having entered the military so young, they were able to retire young, and they returned home to Mississippi.  Reba and Kearney enjoyed their retirement years as members of the Square Wheels camping group and they loved to square dance with the Belles and Buoys.  Kearney, for a time, owned a volkswagon repair shop in Pass Christian where he worked on and built airplanes just as much as cars.  Reba and Kearney didn't always agree on how much time he spent at the airport flying, but Reba kept herself busy with her love of gardening and claimed it was in her blood.  She always had lovely flower gardens and most years a small vegetable garden.
She loved her grandkids and having Christmas & Thanksgiving at her house with the whole family.  She was blessed in her lifetime to have great and great-great grandkids.  She sorely missed those family gatherings as in later years the family drifted apart.
Reba was a complex lady, stubborn, proud and independent.  She was always faithful, generous, and loving to the ones she loved, yet she valued her privacy.  She was very proud and would not want it overlooked that while living in New York she was a student pilot and also helped locate a crashed airplane among the mountains in which the passengers and pilot survived.
Reba was, is, and will always be loved, cherished, and sorely missed until we can see her again on the other side.
