Quincy Albert Long, 70, of Poplarville, MS passed away January 26, 2007 due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Frances Long of Poplarville and three children, Mary Kristen Twedt of Hattiesburg; John Andrew Long of Long Beach and David Chapman Long of Alabaster, AL, as well as six siblings: sisters Eddie Browning of Ewing, KY; Ora Long of Biloxi; Jackie Bush of Canton, OH; Bobbie Townsend of Laurel; brothers H.J. Long of Hattiesburg and Ronald Long of Laurel. He is also survived by seven grandchildren with an eighth due to arrive in May.
Mr. Long was born at home to Herbert Jefferson and Ida Mae Long in 1936 and grew up in Jones County, MS. He received his bachelor's degree in the biological sciences in 1957 and his master's degree in science education in 1959 from the University of Southern Mississippi. Initially, he taught at Northwest Junior College in Senatobia where he met and married Mary. He then taught for two years at USM in Hattiesburg. In 1965, he joined the faculty of the newly opened Jefferson Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College and served as chairman of the science department. Mr. Long became academic dean and worked in administration for seven years. He retired briefly, only to return to the classroom as an instructor for four more years until his permanent retirement from the college in 1996.
During his years teaching anatomy and physiology, botany, and zoology, Mr. Long instructed thousands of students and inspired countless professionals to pursue careers in medicine, nursing, research and technology, education and science. In 1970, the National Science Foundation awarded him a scholarship to continue his biological studies at the doctorate level for which he completed all requirements short of his thesis. An educator of impeccable character, Mr. Long treasured the integrity and the close relationships of fellow faculty and coworkers.
In the laboratory and the lecture hall, Mr. Long shared a vast knowledge of the sciences and a gift for teaching that made the study of living organisms both fascinating and rewarding. He drew from a deep passion for learning and recognized the potential in all students for intellectual and personal growth. Many of his students credit Mr. Long's class as the pivotal point in their education that inspired them to finish school and pursue their dreams. His students frequently returned to share their successes and to thank the instructor who not only taught them the essentials of biology but also demonstrated a genuine concern for their future. His students voted him """"Instructor of the Year"""" at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 1984.
To his family and friends, he delivered unconditional love, endless compassion, comfort and joy. He made the lives of everyone who knew him distinctly better in ways too numerous to mention. A champion of orphans, he rescued and tended sick and abandoned animals throughout his life. He was a truly brilliant and selfless man.
Mr. Long lived in Long Beach from 1966 until 1996, when he and his wife moved to Poplarville. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Long Beach, then Poplarville, and was a Master Gardener. His fascination with the natural world and a God-given green thumb ensured that plants and flowers filled his yard and home with vibrant beauty. He laughed easily and loudly, especially at the irreverent, and loved books, music, and college basketball. He spent his best hours on jaunts in the woods or combing the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico. He hoed a million miles among the rows of his backyard garden. No obituary will ever capture the depth of his kindness, the warmth of his amazing spirit or the extent of his positive influence on this world. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 6:00pm at First United Methodist Church in Long Beach. A reception will follow in the church's life center. A private burial will be held at Long Beach City Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Quincy Long Science Scholarship Fund, MGCCC Foundation, P.O. Box 99, Perkinston, MS 39573.
