Proctor P. Taylor, Jr., age 81 and a resident of Long Beach, went home on Saturday, December 29, 2007.
His is survived by his wife, Ama Heaney Taylor, his sister, Annelle Keith of Prattville, AL; his sons, George Albert Taylor of Chattanooga, TN, Proctor Porter Taylor, III of Hastings, England, and Paul Daniel Taylor of New Orleans, LA and four grandchildren, Joel Taylor, Grace Carruth-Taylor, Sasha Long, and Andrew Long.
Mr. Taylor was born in Oneonta, AL. He was married to and preceded in death by the former Lela Snow Daniel. A graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, he made a career in graphic arts, first as an illustrator for the Air Force, then as a technical writer for NASA. He later became a newspaper publisher, and was an editor of several magazines.
In retirement on the Gulf Coast, he became well known in local art circles as a teacher for local art schools and in the Community College. A profile artist, he was widely exhibited locally and was a founding member of the Colored Pencil Society of America. He also provided private instruction.
He helped found the Gulfport Church of Christ and served as an elder for that congregation for the past several years. A memorial service in his honor will be held at the building, located at 2900 22nd Avenue in Gulfport, on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 1:00pm. Friends and former students are welcome to join with his family to remember him.
