Port Gilbert Evans

Port Gilbert Evans was born in a rural log cabin in Perkinston, Mississippi in 1932 and passed May 16, 2014.
Above all, Port was a devoted father, survived by his daughters Portia Jo Evans, Donna Paige Evans, Pamela Evans Langham, and their mother Jo Evans. He enjoyed telling stories to his four grandchildren, Lauren Paige Hayes, Brittany Ann Langham, David Evans Langham and Jennifer Pamela Langham. Port was a loving husband, survived by Virginia Long Evans. He was the oldest of five, survived by his brother Kenneth and sisters Jean, Lenore Ann and Sharon. His parents were Nolan Evans and Picola Hickman Evans of Perkinston, MS.
Port graduated from Perkinston High School. He earned his B.S. in history (1954) and Masters of Education (1961) from the University of Southern Mississippi. He also earned his Masters Plus 30 from Louisiana State University. He spent a lifetime serving youth in Mississippi and Louisiana, as a social studies, elementary school, and science teacher, coach for football and basketball. Ultimately he served as an elementary school principal in Slidell Louisiana for 33 years. Throughout retirement, he was often happily greeted by one of the many community adults who remembered him as the dedicated principal and teacher from their past. Port was an avid fisherman and gardener. When he could fish he did, when he could not fish he talked about fishing. He was a student of politics, of history, of farming and of Mississippi.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 19, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunflower Baptist Church,1161 City Road in Perkinston, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Hickman Cemetery on Perk Silver Run Road in Stone County.
