Philip “Phil” Earl Coburn, age 86 of Gulfport, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
Phil was welcomed into eternity by his beloved wife of 56 years, Betty Gene Coburn, who no doubt had a to-do list waiting for him. He was also reunited with his loving parents, Mildred and Ralph Coburn; his brother, Ralph Coburn, who was likely ready to resume their old sibling debates; and his sister-in-law, Judy Coburn, who always kept things lively. While their absence was deeply felt, the thought of their reunion brings comfort to those who loved him.
Mr. Coburn is survived by his three sons, who made sure his life was never boring (or quiet): Philip Coburn (who outkicked his coverage by marrying Angie), Kelly Coburn (who followed suit with Nikki), and Brian Coburn (who is still recovering from growing up with his brothers).
His legacy lives on through seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, who kept him entertained, slightly exhausted, always laughing, and forever proud: Madison Coburn Keyes (who found the one man brave enough to join the family, her husband, Houston) and their daughter, Hallie Elizabeth Keyes, Mary Morgan Coburn (who has somehow convinced Josh Cassidy to sign up for the ride), Mackenzie Coburn, Kelly Ray Gafford, Ian Coburn, Maurin Coburn, and Joseph Coburn. Each of them carries a unique piece of his wit, charm, and legendary stubbornness—whether they appreciate it yet or not. In addition, he had many nieces and nephews who each shared a special place in his heart.
Not to be left out, he is also survived by his sister, Lela Madalyn Malinowski (Founder of the Fountain of Youth, but won't share the coordinates), who kept him in line when no one else could, and his brother, Doug Coburn (who somehow convinced Melody to stick around too!). The family still debates who got the best hair—Phil claimed victory, Madalyn rolled her eyes, and Doug is demanding a recount. #TrueDNA
Mr. Coburn honorably served his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of Private First Class before receiving his honorable discharge. His dedication to service didn’t end there—he continued to uphold his commitment to duty for many years in the Army Reserves, embodying the values of discipline, perseverance, and patriotism throughout his life.
Mr. Coburn took great pride in being a dedicated member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 58) for over 55 years. His commitment to the trade was more than just a career—it was a lifelong passion. Through hard work, skill, and camaraderie, he built a successful career, forged lasting friendships, and contributed to a legacy of excellence in the electrical industry.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially when surrounded by nature. Whether casting a line on a quiet morning, feeling the sun on his face while riding his bicycle, or taking long walks just to soak in the world around him, he embraced every moment with energy and appreciation. A true fitness enthusiast, he never saw exercise as a chore but rather as a way to stay active, clear his mind, and keep up with the people he loved.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, is serving the family. An online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.riemannfamily.com
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Phil’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), an organization that was dear to both he and his wife.
