Peter James Kourkounis, Jr., of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, passed away on Dec. 31, 2022, after suffering a stroke. He was 75 years old.
Peter is preceded in death by his brother, Kim Kourkounis, and parents, Angie and Pete Kourkounis.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy Kourkounis; their two daughters, Erin Monroe (Nate) and Quinn Wojtala (Evan); grandchildren, Ivy and Graham; and brother, Jim Kourkounis (Barbara).
Peter — a Buffalo, New York, native — was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. But perhaps his favorite role was his most recent as Papou to his two grandchildren.
He led a successful career in human resources for nearly five decades and retired as Director of HR at Island View Casino and Resort in 2020. He was married to Betsy, the love of his life, for 37 years. In retirement, Peter and Betsy traveled, competed in solitaire and hearts and tried not to drive each other crazy while staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Peter enjoyed family time, reading, exercising, watching Seinfeld, refinishing antique furniture and listening to Leonard Cohen. He had a newfound appreciation for Snoop Dogg (his personality, not so much his music). He took great pride in daily care of his yard and one of his proudest accomplishments was winning Yard of the Month. His family and friends will dearly miss his dry sense of humor, kind heart and being asked, “how the heck are ya?”
