Peggy Jane Duncan Martin was born July 24, 1922, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She was the youngest of four children to George Thomas Duncan and Martha Jane Farrell Duncan. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings, Reginald E. Duncan, Opyl Duncan Gordon, and Alden Duncan, and by her youngest son, Mark Richard Martin.
Peggy, a registered nurse, married Robert Alvin Martin on June 10, 1944, in Jackson, MS, while Robert was attending Millsap's V-12 program to become a commissioned Naval Officer during WWII. Their first of four boys, Robert (Bob) Duncan Martin was born August 25, 1945, in Jackson and as the family followed Robert's Naval career the other three boys were born: William (Bill) Gordon Martin in Oakland, CA, on May 23, 1947; Gary Lee Martin in San Diego, CA, on March 12, 1952, and Mark Richard Martin in New London, CT, on Oct. 1, 1954. Peggy and the boys enjoyed the Navy life and lived in such diverse locations as Adak, Alaska; Zion, Illinois; Norfolk, Virginia; and Guam. In fact, they enjoyed Guam so much, the tour was extended for a year. Their final duty station was the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Mississippi. All four boys graduated from Gulfport High School. Besides Gulfport, Peggy's favorite place to live was San Diego and Guam.
In Gulfport, Peggy's life changed dramatically when she and Robert divorced a few years after he retired from the Navy. Peggy took on the challenging task of working full time at Gulfport Memorial Hospital and raising four boys. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Gulfport and remained faithful until a stroke required her moving to Lakeview Nursing Home. Peggy had earlier retired from Gulfport Memorial Hospital as the Supervising Shift Nurse. Peggy peacefully died on November 21, 2011, at Lakeview.
Peggy is survived by three sons, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and favorite brother-in-law, Conrad Martin, Richland, MS, and sister-in-law, Patsy Brent, Springfield, MO. As her wish, Peggy's ashes will be spread off the end of Eure's Pier where she loved to watch the birds and the changing sea. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 2111 15th St. Gulfport, MS 39501.
The Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, was in charge of arrangements.
