Chief Master Sergeant (Retired) Paul Joseph Nelson, US Air Force died on July 6, 2018, in D'Iberville, MS, where he resided.
Paul was born in Chicago, IL, in 1937 to Olaf L. Nelson and Florence (McCabe) Nelson, both deceased. His wife, Sumako, preceded him in death in 2001. Paul and Sumako were married in Japan in July 1963. Their infant son, Joseph Nelson, died in Japan in 1966.
Paul leaves two daughters to cherish his memory, Jennifer (John) Wilson and Christina Nelson; grandchildren, Alexander, Spencer, Katherine, and Joseph Wilson; sister, Rosemary (Steve) Holeman; nieces and nephew, Tara (Erik) Kawasaki, Kerry (Jonathan) Schwanbeck, Stephanie Holeman, Matthew Holeman; and many beloved cousins and friends.
Paul grew up in Ohio in the home of his aunt and uncle Peg and Richard Dowd and his five cousins. After graduating from Burton High School in 1955, he attended Kent State University for two years and then joined the Air Force, where he served nearly 30 years. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Vietnam Service Medal, and Humanitarian Service Medal, among other medals. He was a flight engineer on C130 airplanes, which were known as the "Jeep of the Air Force". While stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, he flew with the Hurricane Hunters.
In his spare time, his hobbies included collecting model trains and trucks, road trips, and taking his dogs for long walks in the national forest. He loved animals, owned three rescue dogs, and he was recognized as volunteer of the year by the Harrison County Humane Society.
Paul will be interred with his son, Joseph, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska on Friday, September 21, 2018 at 2:00pm.
