Odis L. ""Buddy"" Helms was called home to the Lord on Saturday, December 4, 2010.
Mr. Helms was born February 13, 1929 in Centre, AL. He was a resident of Gulfport, MS for 56 years. Mr. Helms retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years of service as an Air Traffic Controller. He later retired as a Civil Service employee instructing Air Traffic Controllers. Mr. Helms was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Sunday School Teacher. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Humanitarian Service.
Mr. Helms was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie and L.L. Helms; and his brothers, Jack, Clark, and Tab Helms.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nell McCoy Helms; daughter, Debbie Boutwell (Ken), Oxford, MS; son, Terry Helms (Angel), Gulfport, MS; daughter Bobbi Combs (Bob), Woodbridge, VA. He is also survived by grandchildren Brent Boutwell (Megan), Brooks Boutwell (Heather), Kylea Boutwell; Keating Helms, Kevin Helms, Kennedy Helms; Rob Combs, Carl Combs, Cory Combs; one great grandchild Laz Boutwell; his sister Marilyn Ford of Hokes Bluff, AL and many nieces and nephews. The family thanks Andrew Weidert, Buddy's care provider.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 5 to 7 pm at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Three Rivers Rd. Gulfport, MS.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at 11:00 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Gulfport, MS.
Interment will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Feed My Sheep, 2615 19th St., Gulfport, MS 39501.
