Born on November 8, 1918 to Floyd and Viola Kerr, Nona Elizabeth Kerr Elixson died on Friday, June 27, 2008, in her home in Ridgeland.
She was preceded in death by her husband James aÌ‚â‚Å“Jimâ₝ Brooks Elixson. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Gayle and BJ Kerr of Bishopville, SC; her sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Bill Hamiter of Orangeburg, SC; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Kerr of Columbia, SC, and Tini Kerr of Lancaster, SC; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kerr Grabowski of Sussex, NJ, and Jane and Gary Hensarling of Clinton; three granddaughters and their husbands, Crawford Grabowski and Jim Bankston of Brandon, Amy and Jim Voeller of San Antonio, TX, and Rebekah and Manrique Salazar of San Jose, Costa Rica; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Born in McBee, SC, Mrs. Elixson grew up in a fun-loving family of nine. After obtaining her nursing degree from the Columbia Hospital of Nursing she practiced in Columbia, SC, where she married Jim, the love of her life. She and Jim moved to Gulfport in 1962, making their home of 40 years in Bayou View. NonaaÌ‚â‚â„¢s love of people and community was evident throughout her life. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and held leadership positions in the Gulfport Civic League, the Great Southern Golf Club, and the Gulfport Memorial Hospital LadiesaÌ‚â‚â„¢ Auxiliary where she was involved with the scholarship program for nursing students.
In 2004 she left Gulfport to live in Ridgeland near her family and soon developed friendships in her retirement home, where she will be remembered as the lady who always wore a smile.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2008, at 2:00pm at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery in Gulfport.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Grace Bible Church, Building Fund, 380 Highland Colony Pkwy., Ridgeland, MS 39157, where she attended after her move to Ridgeland.
